A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
