Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
