Colombian President Warns 'I Shall Take Up Arms Again' should US Launches an Attack.

The US President along with Colombia's president have escalated the tone in their verbal conflict, heightening tensions bilaterally following American military units attacked Venezuela with the aim of deposing Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from office.

"He runs drug factories and processing labs and that won't last much longer," Trump remarked.

Growing Rhetoric and Claims

Speaking to reporters over the weekend, the US president suggested comparable military action against Colombia, claiming the nation is also "very ill" and led by a sick man involved in producing cocaine and selling it to America."

While Colombia stands as the globe's biggest producer of cocaine, authorities have found no indication that President Gustavo Petro, the nation's current leader, is personally tied to the trade.

A Strained Partnership

The country for decades served as a close partner of the United States in the campaign against drug trafficking and received wide political approval from American politicians, yet ties have soured markedly following Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s illicit drug economy is predominantly run by guerrilla factions including one major cartel, the ELN guerrilla group and dissident factions of the demobilized Farc, a large contingent of whom disbanded after a historic peace agreement.

Petro's Firm Response

When asked whether armed intervention similar to Venezuela was on the cards for Colombia, Trump said: "That seems like a good idea from my perspective."

The Colombian leader, a former leftist guerrilla who disarmed in the 1990s, rejected the accusations. "I am no an illegitimate leader nor am I a narco," he stated.

"He comments uninformed. End the false accusations," he posted in a post.

"If US bombs target rural communities, they will become numerous insurgents in the hills. And should they arrest me, which a significant portion of the country loves and respects, they will provoke the ‘jaguar’ of the populace," he admonished.

From Fighter to Statesman

He passed part of his youth belonging with the radical M-19 insurgent movement although reports indicate to have ever participated in combat. Following his disarmament, he was involved in writing the constitutional rewrite in the early 90s and later became a respected lawmaker. He was mayor of Bogotá before winning the nation's highest office.

"I swore not to touch arms again ... but for the homeland I shall resume the fight," he said.

Increased Security and Cross-Political Condemnation

The Colombian defence minister reported that the national leader's security detail had received additional support.

Several members of Colombia’s conservative opposition have allied themselves with Trump, yet figures spanning Colombian politics have rejected the possibility of American military action targeting Colombia.

Bilateral and Financial Sanctions

The US withdrew the president's entry visa subsequent to he urged US troops to ignore unlawful commands. In October, it placed economic restrictions on Petro, his wife and several key allies.

At the same time as the US increased its troop levels in the region and striking vessels thought to carry drugs against Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets executed strikes on maritime targets in the eastern Pacific region adjacent to Colombia.
