European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.

  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, following concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Additionally, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts point out that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “resource imperialism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
