Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the massive storm triggered extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams recorded floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel saved 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and a second individual killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated it was still working to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making tropical storms stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has risen doubled in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage to the country annually.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
